God of Cookery Sorrowful Char Siu Rice
Postcard of deliciousness from Hong Kong.
Homage to the legendary film God of Cookery, iconically played by comedian Stephen Chow in 1996. This is the humble char siu (aka barbecued pork) rice with choi sum and a fried egg on the side, typically served in a Hong Kong Cha Chan Teng「茶餐廳」or street food stall. In the film, it’s known as ‘sorrowful’ because it’s an emotional tribute to someone he deeply regrets losing, who made this for him when he was penniless, and yet ended up sacrificing herself for him to live. Sticky, sweet caramelised barbecue pork with crispy oozy fried egg, this dish is often drizzled with a special sweet soy sauce that together create a wholesome holy trinity of joy. A deeply satisfying and universally loved dish for all walks of life. One of the best food films ever, full of tongue-in-cheek satire and deliciousness from the most humble and unexpected places.
Dimensions: 10cm x 14.8cm
